Piracy Facts & Figures
There has been a dramatic increase inpirates’ attacks in the Gulf of Aden in recent months, despite EU, USA and NATO naval efforts. Attacks have happened hundreds of miles off the coast, creating an unprecedented challenge.
Naval efforts are unable to provide adequate security coverage for over 1,000,000 sqm of waters. As of April 2009, 18 vessels and over 250 crew members are held hostage in Somalia. Average ransom per vessel is $0.5m to $1,5m.
